Hi my name’s Alex, the Founder of Simple Smoothie Recipes.
Welcome to the blog on which I share smoothie recipes – from experts and influencers – that helped my girlfriend eat healthy and lose weight as part of a healthy diet. They also changed my family’s health for the better! I’m the main smoothie maker in our household so I’ll also share new recipes that I am experimenting with at the moment to continue our journey towards a healthy lifestyle for our family.
I’ve been making smoothies for me and my girlfriend for over two years now – especially green smoothies – because I wanted to support her effort to maintain a healthy weight after having our children. The new Vitamix® Professional Series 750 Food Blender is our preferred blender at the moment.
Smoothies have made a massive difference to my life and the life of my family, especially my girlfriend. Now she’s had 3 children and was always very conscious of the weight that she had gained. Added to that, she would binge and eat foods that she normally wouldn’t eat. She wasn’t as active as she used to be. Once she had recovered from her pregnancy, we introduced smoothies into our diet and added the smoothies to our regular diet to supplement the food that we were eating.
We would have breakfast with a smoothie, we’d have lunch with a smoothie and dinner with a smoothie. These smoothies would contain things like kale, cashew nuts, peanuts, raspberries, even sometimes chocolate, banana, pear, so a variety of different fruit and vegetables.
In fact, you couldn’t actually taste the vegetables, so they’d be very nutritious and if consumed with your regular meal would really help you to last until your next meal. This would reduce the temptation to actually binge on food, on fatty foods like chocolate or crisps and biscuits.
Losing Weight After Pregnancy
As time passed, we saw the effects that it was having with my girlfriend, in that she did lose a lot of weight, but in a healthy way, in a way that didn’t mean she had to starve herself or force herself to eat food that she didn’t like. These smoothies were nutritious. They were good-tasting smoothies. We enjoyed it, so it was a very enjoyable way for my girlfriend to lose the weight that she had gained.
Some of the smoothies even helped to develop quite lean muscle. For example, we added protein-rich foods into the smoothies, and that would helped to gain muscle, or gain mass that wasn’t fatty mass. It was, from my point of view, a great way to help me to gain weight in a healthy way without using things like steroids and without using artificial means. Everything was natural.
Building the immune system
Another reason we started to incorporate smoothies into our diet, was because we were experiencing prolonged periods of flu and cold symptoms, and it was very difficult for us to recover. That was in part due to our poor immune system. There were certain foods that we would add to the smoothies that would help to boost our immune system and help us to detox.
Things like blueberries and raspberries have antioxidants, that would help us to detox, to cleanse our system. As time passed by and we drank these smoothies over a course of time ( because now we’ve had them for over a year) we found that although we still developed cold and flu symptoms, our recovery time would decrease quite dramatically. We wouldn’t have the flu and the cold for nearly as long as we used to have before we had the smoothies in our diet. I think because we had a lot of kale, which is known to be high in vitamin C, this helped us to, as I said, boost our immune system to really begin to live a much healthier diet.
Reducing Meat Intake
Because we were drinking more and more smoothies, what we found is that we were beginning to cut some meat out of our diet. We reduced the portions of meat that we had in our diet. They reduced in size, or sometimes we cut them out completely, because we felt, as I said, completely satisfied when we had our regular meal alongside a smoothie.
We used to have quite heavy meals and quite large portions of meat, and this used to leave us feeling quite heavy, as though we’d probably eaten too much. We consumed too much. Again, having these smoothies in our diet meant that we felt more energetic. We felt satisfied but not in a way that we were completely gorged on the food that we’d eaten.
The great thing about fruit, for the most part you is that you can really feel and see the effects, the value that they’re having. Whereas if you consume too much meat, then you can automatically feel the effect it has on your digestive system. You can feel the effect it has on your body and your energy reserves.
Where to start
We started off using a NutriBullet, the NutriBullet 900 series, which is a very powerful and a very quick and easy-to-use entry-level juicer, smoothie maker. It’s great, because as I said, it’s very easy to use. It’s very compact. It churns down the fruit into something that’s really consumable and easy to really digest, and that’s what the body really wants.
The body wants to be able to consume and digest the food – like healthy fats, proteins and fibre – effectively so it goes through your system as quickly as possible. I think that’s partly why we felt the feeling of being satisfied and having that feeling of not feeling laden and overpowered with heavy foods and processed sugars.
Now when you start out with smoothies, it can be quite confusing. There are so many recipes, so many different people doing different things and different recipes, different smoothie makers on the market. We’ll help you to start your journey and share the best recipes and resources to make things as easy as possible.
